Press Releases 11/02/2002 11:38:47 "Council Plays The Game As School’s New Games Hall Takes Shape"
From now until the autumn staff and pupils at Bishopbriggs High School will watch as their new £800,000 games hall takes shape on land at the side of the school.
From now until the autumn staff and pupils at Bishopbriggs High School will watch as their new £800,000 games hall takes shape on land at the side of the school.
Already the steel shell of the building is in place with work scheduled to be complete this August, meaning it will be fully functional for the start of the new school year.
Councillor Eric Gotts, Convener of the Council’s Education & Leisure Services Committee, met local Councillor Billy Hendry and Sue Bruce, Strategic Director (Community) on the site to see how the project is coming along.
He said, “Education remains a key spending priority for East Dunbartonahire Council and this investment is an example of our commitment to the future of our young people and our schools. How to deliver longer term investment in schools is one of the major challenges facing Councils at the moment and East Dunbartonshire is currently considering all available funding options.
“In the meantime we will continue with the type of investment which has secured this new games hall at Bishopbriggs High School, which saw a new library being built in Bearsden Academy and which will bring a new games hall to Turnbull High School next year.
Pupils will be able to use the following facilities when the new games hall opens:
Ÿ Full size courts for volleyball, netball and basketball Ÿ Two double and two single badminton courts Ÿ New changing facilities with showers Ÿ Disabled changing facilities Ÿ Foyer area soon to become a fitness suite
Local Councillor Billy Hendry said, “I am delighted that this project is underway and that pupils at Bishopbriggs High can look forward to using brand new, modern sport and fitness facilities and equipment. The school has a proud record of achievement and I am delighted that this Council is able to improve the working environment for both pupils and staff. ”
Head Teacher Bill Wallace added, “It is an exciting time for the school and we can’t wait until the Games Hall is finished and we can start using it. It will have a huge impact on the way the school is organised and will make life much easier at exam times when the assembly hall was off-limits to younger PE students.
“Many of our pupils have a great interest in sport, particularly in gymnastics and football - both boys and girls. I know that the games hall will be used constantly throughout the week.”
